Asclepias Syriaca Plants

Asclepias syriaca ‘Common Milkweed’

A native Milkweed, also known as ‘Common Milkweed‘, is so easy to grow and can be found almost anywhere: open woods, fields, roadsides and gardens! It is drought tolerant and can be grown in less than perfect soils.

They produce a lovely large flower that varies in color from almost white to deep pink purple. The overall color is considered to be mauve, and the blooms are long lasting and have a lovely, delicate scent.

Common Milkweed Plants

Milkweed provides the perfect food source for Monarch Butterflies, in fact, these plants are the sole food source for Monarchs; they lay their eggs on the plants, and the plant itself becomes the food source for the caterpillars.

Although these milkweed plants are easy to grow, and considered ‘common’, they are facing real threats that have reduced their numbers dramatically. Development and increased use of herbicides are the biggest challenges these important natives face, so we encourage customers to plant and encourage others to do so as well.
